coming to america
After 24 long hours of travelling - from London to Amsterdam to Newark to Atlanta - I've arrived. Travel food is not often noted for its excellence, and yesterday was no exception.
The food highlight was the KLM flight from London to Amsterdam. They served two small sandwiches - one, goats cheese and apple, and two, roast chicken and pesto mayonnaise.
But from there it was all downhill. The black-eye-bean masala for lunch was fairly dire, though the vegetarian option was still preferable to the chicken or the lasagne. And, on a 6-hour layover at Newark, a last resort of parmesan-crusted sicilian quesadillas at Friday's wasn't much better.
But I'm here now, determined to eat well. Holiday rules are in effect, so there are no restrictions. The most important thing to keep in mind over the next two weeks will be portion control. There's no problem with buffalo wings and cheese fries (American classics). But I'm also going to have a lot of lovely local fruit and fresh salads. On a road trip down to Florida and then back up via Savannah, there should be many highlights aside from the service station stop-offs. Check back when you can.
